Recent Grant Awards
COMPETITIVE COMMUNITY GRANTS 2011
The Licking County Foundation recently approved grants totaling $222,297 to 17 local nonprofit organizations. Awarded through unrestricted and field of interest funds, these grants carry out the wishes of fund donors and help nonprofits meet the ever-changing needs of our community. These grants will support a wide variety of activities benefiting citizens of all ages (infants to seniors), education, arts and culture, health, human services, and parks/recreation in 2011. The organizations that received these grants are as follows:

Granville Studio for the Visual Arts: “Primordia” art enrichment experience for 6th graders in Newark City Schools
•Carol Strawn Center: $2,350 to support the Senior Safety: What You Need to Know community education program designed to educate residents about the mistreatment of senior citizens: how to identify it, prevent it, and report it. Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.
•Granville Studio for the Visual Arts: $11,015 to support the “Primordia” enrichment experience for sixth graders in Newark City Schools who will create and exhibit conceptual installation art inspired by cellular biology and some of the world’s foremost contemporary artists. Granted from the J. P. Shai, II Fund and the Unrestricted Fund.
•Licking County Aging Program: $16,000 to support the purchase of a new combination oven/steamer to reduce cooking time and improve the quality and taste of the over 850 meals prepared daily for the Meals on Wheels program. Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.
•Licking County Center for the Visually Impaired: $50,000 to support eye care examinations, eye glasses, and low vision aids for financially-disadvantaged children and adults under 59 years old. Granted from the Thomas M. Kier Memorial Fund
•Licking County Department Job and Family Services: $15,000 to support outreach and enrollment services enabling financially-disadvantaged children to be enrolled or maintain their enrollment in the Healthy Start Medicaid Program for access to medical services. Granted from the William E. and Annie S. Miller Memorial Fund.
•Licking County Foundation - Foundation Park: $4,755 to support the preservation and beautification of Foundation Park with the installation of a shade tree planter and additional seating. Granted from the William S. and Sue O. Moore Fund.
•Mental Health America of Licking County: $25,000 to support the YES (Youth Engaged in Service) after school and summer program which serves at-risk 11 to 18 year-olds by providing a safe haven and promoting positive youth development—including mentoring, homework help, a hot meal, education on good decision-making, and service learning. Granted from the William E. and Annie S. Miller Memorial Fund.
•My Place To Be: $5,000 to support a drama program for teaching valuable social interaction skills to children facing autism through role playing and acting techniques. Granted from the Thomas M. Kier Memorial Fund
•Newark Midland Theatre Association: $10,000 to support The Virtual Music Workshop which is a collaboration of the Midland Theatre and the Newark-Granville Symphony Orchestra to expose students (preschool to young adults) to a classical multi-media performance of Holst’s The Planets—both live and via an interactive technological delivery system. Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.
•Newark Midland Theatre Association: $20,000 to support programs that bring young people and their families to the theatre for arts experiences—including opportunities for those in our community who could not afford this experience otherwise. Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.
•Newborns in Need: $3,000 to support premature and newborn babies who are sick or in crisis with diaper bags complete with handmade clothing, quilts, blankets, and other necessities. Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.
•Northridge School District - Elementary & Intermediate Schools: $2,200 to support Bully-Proofing Youth, a comprehensive anti-bullying program for 591 elementary and intermediate students (K to 5), in which children, parents and staff are taught methods of identifying kids who target others, as well as kids who are targeted by bullies. Granted from the William E. and Annie S. Miller Memorial Fund.
•Parker Community Park: $9,255 to support a landscaping and beautification project at Parker Community Park in Alexandria. Granted from the Marguerite Halpine Heppenstall Fund.
•Robbins Hunter Museum: $5,000 to support the installation of two handicapped accessible restrooms to better serve all guests visiting the museum. Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.
•Ronald McDonald House Charities: $3,122 to support guest nights at Ronald McDonald House in Columbus for families of seriously ill children from Licking County. Granted from the Alice McFadden and Jack Barnett Fund.
•RSVP of Licking County: $15,000 to support ProjectREACH, a sexuality education program serving about 5,000 area youth (grades 5 to 10) with a 5-day curriculum designed to reinforce the benefits of wise decision-making (including delaying sexual activity and refusing drugs and alcohol). Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.
•The Woodlands’ Center for New Beginnings Shelter: $20,600 to support the Child Advocate Program which serves the immediate needs and issues of children who witness violence in their homes with intervention, mental health therapy, case management, and skills to live a life free of violence. Granted from the William E. and Annie S. Miller Memorial Fund and the Unrestricted Fund.
•The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art & Technology: $5,000 to support the creation of a free keepsake history booklet of stories, images and events for the year-long, community-wide Licking County 150th Anniversary Civil War Commemoration in 2011. Granted from the J. P. Shai, II Fund.
