2010 COMPETITIVE GRANTS

These grants will support a wide variety of activities benefiting education, youth, arts and culture, health, human services, and recreation in 2010.  The organizations that received these grants are as follows:  

Alzheimer’s Association – Central Ohio:  $6,070 to support education and one-on-one onsite care consultations to residents in Licking County who are affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

Heartbeats of Licking County, Inc.:  $20,000 to support a two-story addition connected to the current center that will allow for an anticipated 50% expansion of their client and program services. 

Heath Community Arts Council:  $6,975 to support the installation of an elevator to make the Davis-Shai House facility ADA compatible.

Kairos Academy:  $20,000 to support a vehicle to transport academically and economically at-risk youth to enrichment activities and experiential learning experiences.

Licking County Department of Job and Family Services:  $35,000 to support outreach and enrollment services enabling economically disadvantaged children to be enrolled and to maintain their enrollment in the Healthy Start Medicaid program.

Licking County Family YMCA:  $25,000 to support the expansion and renovation of the Newark Branch YMCA facilities.

Mental Health America of Licking County:  $15,000 to support the operating expenses of the YES Clubhouse facility for one year.

The Midland Theatre:  $20,000 to support performing arts programs for young people and families.

My Place to Be:  $5,000 to support drama classes for students on the autism spectrum to utilize acting methods and techniques for learning communication and social interaction skills. 

National MS Society – Ohio Buckeye Chapter:  $3,000 to support direct client services such as equipment and home modification, respite care, transportation assistance, and individual/family counseling for the uninsured or underinsured in Licking County. 

Ronald McDonald House Charities:  $3,410 to support assistance for 500 guest nights at Ronald McDonald House for families from Licking County.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul Housing Facility, Inc.:  $15,000 to support operational, essential, and administrative services for providing emergency shelter and/or transitional housing and 3 meals per day for 32 adult males for one year. 

Village of Hartford:  $4,600 to support the purchase and installation of five new furnaces with air conditioning in the new community center (the old Hartford Elementary School).

The Woodlands:  $19,400 to support the placement of six social workers in Licking County area schools (five in Newark City Schools and one in Licking Heights School District).

The Works:  $12,500 to support the promotion of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education in Licking County.

 

2009 COMPETITIVE GRANTS

10 grants were awarded to local nonprofit organizations through unrestricted and field of interest funds as follows:

Licking Memorial Health Systems received $75,000 to partially support a dental care program for Licking County children who are otherwise unable to afford it.  Granted from the William E. and Annie S. Miller Memorial Fund.

My Place To Be received $10,000 (last dollar grant) to partially support Camp MakeBelieve, a multi-media system that provides innovative, hands-on-tools to help children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.  Granted from the Thomas M. Kier Memorial Fund.

Licking County Center for the Visually Impaired received $60,000 to partially support eye examinations and eyeglasses for qualifying adults and children in Licking County.  Granted from the Thomas M. Kier Memorial Fund.

Central Ohio Technical College received $26,250 to partially support CollegeASPIRE, an on-campus summer workshop experience for at-risk 11 to 18 year-olds.  Granted from the Marguerite Heppenstall Fund and the Unrestricted Fund.

Granville Studio of Visual Arts received $7,513 to partially support the opening of a creative education center which will provide Licking County students and teachers with on-site visual arts classes.  Granted from the J.P. Shai, II Fund.

Newark City Schools - Middle Schools (Heritage, Liberty and Wilson) received $3,000 to fully fund a presentation that helped equip, empower, and encourage students to rediscover hope in their lives.  Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.

Licking County Aging Program received $11,000 to partially support the purchase of the Sam Scan Meal Delivery System that will streamline and expand the meal service they provide.  Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.

Licking County Community Health Clinic received $36,000 to partially support the relocation of the Community Health Clinic to better serve low income residents of Licking County.  Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.

The Midland Theatre received $20,000 to help support programs for young people and families.  Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.

Downtown Newark Association Beautification Committee received $4,000 to fully fund planting and maintaining a four-season garden around the downtown Square’s gazebo which will be a focal point for visitors year round.  Granted from the William S. and Sue O. Moore Field of Interest Fund.

Licking County Department of Job and Family Services, the Licking County Health Department, Newark City Schools, and the Licking County Education Service Center received $15,000 to assist low income children with emergency medical, dental and behavioral health needs.  Granted from the William E. and Annie S. Miller Memorial Fund.  

Licking County Children & Families First Council / Pooled Funds Program received $20,000 to assist low income children who are in need of specialized services.  Granted from the William E. and Annie S. Miller Memorial Fund.  

Licking County Health Department / Head Lice Eradication Program received $25,000 to assist children, families and schools with head lice management.  Managing head lice is a very difficult challenge for families and schools.  Granted from the William E. and Annie S. Miller Memorial Fund.  

 

2008 COMPETITIVE GRANTS  

15 discretionary grants were awarded to charitable organizations in our community through unrestricted and field of interest funds as follows:

Licking County United Way received $59,000 to support hiring a facilitator to help partnering organizations address the behavioral needs of children and families.  Granted from the William E. and Annie S. Miller Memorial Fund.

The Midland Theatre received $20,000 to help support programs for young people and families.  Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.

The Village Network received $15,000 to support the purchase of a minivan to transport at-risk foster children and families.  Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.

Weathervane Playhouse received $25,000 to help support The Next Stage Capital Campaign to provide an enhanced comfort and quality experience. Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.

The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art & Technology received $50,000 to help support the development and construction of the ME Lab Exhibition. Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.

Mental Health America of Licking County received $15,000 to support the YES Club’s operating expenses in its new and expanded facility for one year.  Granted from the William E. and Annie S. Miller Memorial Fund.

Newark High School’s Special Education Department received $3,476 to support the purchase of a Smart Board for students with cognitive disabilities.  Granted from the Thomas M. Kier Memorial Fund.

Equine Assisted Therapy, Inc. received $5,000 to help support the construction of a building which will be used for lesson activities for children with disabilities and as an observation room for parents.  Granted from the Thomas M. Kier Memorial Fund.

Great Plains Assistance Dogs (Jud, North Dakota) received $15,000 to help support the cost of a service dog for an individual with disabilities in Licking County.  Granted from the Thomas M. Kier Memorial Fund.

A Call to College received $11,000 to support ACT college entrance exam fees for Newark High School juniors, and other expenses for engaging juniors in seeking higher education.  Granted from the Marguerite Heppenstall Fund.

Newspaper Network of Central Ohio’s Newspapers in Education Fund received $900 to help support providing 1,400 newspapers per day to Licking County students and teachers to promote literacy.  Granted from the John David Spencer Memorial Fund.

The City of Newark received $2,500 to help support the Mayor’s Concert Series performances.  Granted from the J.P. Shai, II Fund.

The Works:  Ohio Center for History, Art & Technology received $5,000 to help support “A Celebration of Public Art” event to recognize the artists and donors who have contributed to the community through the donation and placement of public art.  Granted from the J.P. Shai, II Fund.

Licking County Sheriff’s Office Senior Programming Division received $6,300 to help support the purchase of the Care Call Reassurance computer and program that will call a subscribed elderly person on a regular basis to check on their well-being.  Granted from the Unrestricted Fund.
